How to Pack for a Trip with Just a Carry-On | The 5-4-3-2-1 Method That Actually Works
Share
We’ve all been there — the night-before-travel panic pack.
You’ve got piles of clothes everywhere, the weather looks unpredictable, and somehow your suitcase is already full before you’ve even added shoes.
On our last trip — a week away visiting family — I totally abandoned my usual system. It was humid, we had a few “look-presentable” plans with my parents, and I convinced myself I needed options. Spoiler: I didn’t.
Here’s what happened (and why I’m never ditching the 5-4-3-2-1 rule again).
The Panic Pack (and the Reality Check)
What I over packed:
-
3 pairs of socks
-
3 nice tops
-
4 casual tops (plus one gifted while away)
-
A whole lot of good intentions
What I actually wore:
-
2 swim costumes + sarong dresses
-
1 bikini rash vest + shorts (snorkel/sun-safe set)
-
Underwear
-
2 sleep/lounge tees + cycle shorts
-
2 smart-casual dresses
-
3 pairs of shorts
-
1 pair of linen trousers
-
About 5 tees/tops mixed between nice and casual
-
My hooded towel + microfibre hair wrap (the best thing ever)
-
Travel outfit: tee, cardi, leggings, and trainers
So basically… exactly what my system already tells me to pack. 54321 & accessories.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Rule
This little framework keeps travel light, calm, and realistic — especially for those of us who like to look nice and still fit everything into a small suitcase or cabin bag.
The formula:
-
5 tops (tees, tanks, shirts)
-
4 bottoms (shorts, skirts, trousers)
-
3 extras (dresses, swimsuits, or “going-out” outfits location dependant)
-
2 lounge/sleepwear sets
-
1 outer layer (cardigan, jacket, or jumper depending on season, or additional 'extra' if needed)
It’s flexible, mix-and-matchable, and perfect for trips up to about 5-7 days — whether that’s a city break, family holiday, or beach week. Make it 10 days with a quick laundry trip.
Pair this with the essentials: underwear | wash kit | travel towel | 1 pair alternative shoes
The Travel Outfit Formula
I always wear the same basic combo when flying — even when I’m heading from hot to hot climates. Airport air-con and in-flight chill can be freezing, and comfort wins every time.
My go-to travel uniform:
-
Gym leggings (soft, stretchy, easy to move in)
-
Sport-fabric or Organic cotton top (breathable and quick-dry)
-
Hoodie or cardigan (layers matter!)
-
Trainers — because every trip needs a pair, whether for city exploring, airport dashes, or spontaneous hikes.
It’s the kind of outfit that works for every climate, every body type, and every queue at security.

Pack Smarter, Not Harder
Some small swaps make a huge difference:
-
Packing cubes: real-life cheat code for fitting more and finding things fast.
-
Shampoo bars: no leaks, no liquids, no fuss.
-
Quick-dry towel: your best friend for beaches, hostels, or last-minute swims.
-
Reusable bottle: the Perevor insulated bottle keeps your drinks cold in the sun or hot on a chilly airport morning. Fill after security & dont worry about waiting for the drinks cart that never comes when you need it!
-
Lightweight fabrics: cottons & linen, bamboo, or sports fabrics stay fresh longer (and help you pack less).

What to Keep in Your “Personal Item” Bag
Think of this as your in-transit comfort kit. Mine usually includes:
-
Passport, wallet, and travel docs
-
Phone + charger cable (I pack both c-c & usb-c for older outlets)
-
Snacks and hydration
-
Small toiletries (lip balm & deodorant)
-
Spare tee shorts and underwear in a cube (just in case luggage disappears or your child kindly voms on you)
-
E-reader or book
-
Noise-cancelling headphones
-
Perevor travel cup for early airport morning coffee
Tailor It for Season and Destination
A few quick tweaks make the 54321 rule fit any trip:
Hot climates:
-
Add a second swimsuit shorts or sarong, drop a pair of jeans.
-
Lightweight shirts double as cover-ups.
Cooler seasons:
-
Swap linen for merino or cotton layers.
-
A puffer jacket or overshirt makes the perfect “1.”
City breaks:
-
Focus on neutrals that mix easily.
-
Add one dressier option for dinners or shows.
Adventure or family travel:
-
Add one waterproof layer or tech item (light shell, fleece).
-
Keep outfits multipurpose — a dress that doubles as a beach cover-up, shorts that work for hiking or sightseeing.
I love lighteight quick dry 'rinsable' fabrics - i hate ironing
Takeaway
Every time I overpack, it’s the same story: I wear the same favourites on rotation, ignore the extras, and wish I’d saved the space for snacks or souvenirs.
So next time you’re tempted to throw in one more “just in case” top — don’t.
Count down from five, zip up, and go live your next adventure lighter.
Because the less you pack, the freer you feel.
